We had so many amazing donations which filled our raffle baskets ~ everything from dog toys and treats to chocolate for the humans. A great selection of silent auction items from a basket of cheer to handmade jewelry. We can’t forget about our amazing selection of baked goods that our volunteers baked and packaged for humans and canines.

All of those that attended enjoyed great conversation with friends, new and old, and even some dancing to the tunes provided by our DJ.

Throughout the night, a slideshow created by volunteer Denise Stout (shown below) reminded us all of the pups we have all had the pleasure of meeting on their way to their forever homes. Thanks Denise!

We knew it wouldn’t take long for Merlot to find the perfect home and we weren’t wrong! She is now the very lucky member of a wonderful family that is dedicated to spoiling her!

Congratulations to Merlot and her new family!

First up is Dempsey. This handsome boy is just a year old, which means he’s still a lot of puppy! He’s a bit mouthy when seeking attention and we’re working with him on that. It just seems that this boy never got the training that he needed to help him be a good canine citizen. He is a quick learner and he’s learning every day!

He is good with other dogs his size or larger and spends much of his day romping with the other pups. Dempsey is looking for a sibe-savvy home that will continue with his training.

Next up is Mila. This gorgeous red and white is still just a baby at 6 months old. Her human Mom got a new job and knew that the long hours alone were not good for Mila, so she made the very difficult decision to find her another home that would love Mila as much as she does.

Typical of young Huskies, Mila has an abundance of energy and will do best in a home with another active canine housemate. She’s a smart girl that has already graduated from puppy training ~ she knows sit, down and paw.

Our next addition is Nelson. This adorable boy is approximately 3 years old and made his way to us from an area shelter when they felt it would be best for Nelson to be placed through rescue. He was originally found as a stray and sadly, his family never came to take him home.

Nelson enjoys playing with other dogs his size or larger and enjoys hours of playtime with the other pups. We don’t really know anything about his past, but we have learned that he is a little possessive of his food at mealtime. He will politely accept his bowl, however, prefers to be left alone while he’s eating. For that reason, Nelson would be best placed in a home with no small children.

Finally, meet Zeus. If you’re thinking that you don’t see any Husky, you may be right. This 2 year old boy is a Lab/Shepherd mix that we just knew we had to help when we heard his story. Zeus had been brought home as a pup for a 6 year old who soon lost interest in having him as a companion. Without taking the time to train him, his “family” put him in a crate in the basement. When he eventually figured out how to open the crate and get out, they chained him to a treadmill and left him alone in the basement.

They finally decided to take him to the local shelter where poor Zeus was overwhelmed and frightened at all of the noise and activity. The shelter felt it would be in his best interest to transfer him to rescue where he could learn what life in a family is supposed to be. After joining MaPaw, it didn’t take long for Zeus to find happiness in frolicking with the other pups and soaking up attention from the humans around him.

He’s ready to find his forever family and we can’t wait for the next chapter of his life!

Phoenix came to MaPaw when his family could no longer care for him. This boy is a bigger pup ~ you might say he’s a little “husky”… We started him on a more structured diet and added some extra exercise to his daily routine. He has a wonderful personality and quickly makes friends with humans and other canines. When MaPaw alum, Kita, and her family contacted us to meet Phoenix, we made arrangements for them to meet. Much to our delight, a match was made!

Phoenix was adopted on January 20th.

Our second lucky pup was Oreo, our Siberian Husky/Native American Indian Dog mix. We had originally been contacted by Oreo’s owner when Oreo and his canine housemate escaped and were wrongfully accused of chasing the neighbor’s sheep. Luckily, their names were eventually cleared and they were allowed to stay with their family. Unfortunately, Oreo couldn’t be persuaded to forget about his wandering ways. Oreo’s family felt it would be best for him to come to MaPaw where we could help him find a family that would love him as much as his family did and keep him safe.

Imagine our surprise when White Fang’s family contacted us interested in meeting Oreo. White Fang is also a Native American Indian Dog. The 2 boys got along splendidly and we made arrangements for his official adoption the following weekend. His adoption became official on February 1st.

Congratulations to both of our lucky boys! We look forward to updates and lots of photos!

She somehow lost her family and found herself at the local shelter. After nobody came forward to take Tippy home, the shelter contacted MaPaw to help her find her forever home.

Tippy quickly made herself comfortable in her foster home and her true personality started to shine through ~ this girl was ready to take on the world! We soon determined that she was an alpha female (aren’t they all?) and that she needed to be supervised when playing with other dogs. Tippy is a lap dog that loves to cuddle with her humans and never tires of giving kisses.

All that patience finally paid off for Tippy when she journeyed to her forever home on Saturday (January 19th)! Check out the smiles in her adoption photo!

Schatzi joined MaPaw 2 years ago after being found on the side of the road by 2 of our volunteers. This beautiful girl was horribly thin ~ you could clearly see every bone in her body. With lots of TLC, Schatzi was soon gaining weight and her wonderful personality started to shine.

On Saturday, she had a seizure and became paralyzed in her hind end. She was taken immediately to emergency. After x-rays and blood work showed no specific cause, the doctors were leaning toward a neurological issue. We agreed to leave her overnight for medications and observation. On Sunday morning, there was still no improvement and she was clearly in pain. Although it broke our hearts, we decided it was time to help Schatzi begin her journey North of the Rainbow Bridge. In the arms of those that loved her most, Schatzi closed her eyes and passed peacefully.

Dearest Schatzi ~ You were our beloved Shepherd with a Husky heart. We are honored to have had the privilege of caring for you and sharing our lives with you for the past 2 years. Wear your silver harness proudly as you dance among the stars, free of pain. You will forever be in our hearts. Until we meet again, dear friend…

It didn’t take long for us to find our first official guest. Lobo is a 5 year old boy that was surrendered to the shelter by his family when they could no longer care for him. He’s a handsome red and white boy with amazing blue eyes. Lobo joined us on December 27th.

We were worried that Lobo would be lonely in the kennels without any “neighbors”. It turns out that we didn’t need to worry about that for too long…

Phoenix joined us just a few days later. He was brought to us by his human dad when he could no longer care for him. Prior to joining MaPaw, Phoenix had been staying with a family member who apparently fed Phoenix anything he wanted. Phoenix is a bit on the chunky side, but we’re working on getting that extra weight off this sweet 5 year old boy.

Oreo was next to join the kennels. This big guy is a 3-1/2 year old Siberian Husky/Northern American Indian Dog. We had originally been contacted by his owner when Oreo and his canine housemate were accused of going after some sheep. Luckily their names were cleared, but Oreo couldn’t stop his urge to escape and his family felt it best that he be relocated.

Maverick is another new addition to the MaPaw family. He is a gorgeous black and white bi-eyed boy. At just 2 years of age, this poor guy had been bounced around a fair amount in just the few weeks prior to coming to MaPaw. He has settled into his foster home and seems content with his routine.

Some of the volunteers headed to the kennel ~ the fence needed some work and the kennel interior got the first coat of paint. Others went to the barn to organize and make treat bags for our photos with Santa.

When the work was done, the fun started! We brought out some of our lucky pups for some fun with the volunteers. Our pups were brushed and their nails trimmed. Finally, they went for a nice walk around the property. They were all pooped!

Our volunteers were busy again this weekend…

Linda painted Siren’s doghouse, which is situated next to our sign at the entrance to the property. The doghouse has been painted to match the kennel building. It looks amazing!

Volunteers, Matt and Danielle, stopped by to lend a hand to finish some of the projects on our to-do list.

We are waiting on final approval by the inspector so that the electric company can “flip the switch”. The electrical outlets are all in place. The Heating/Air Conditioning unit and hot water heater are installed and both are waiting to be hooked up.

The drywall has been completed on the interior walls and the spackling is underway to prep the walls for paint. The bathroom, utility/supply closet and office walls are all up.

The interior floors need to be sealed, but that will be one of the last items to be completed.

We’re getting so close!

The ASPCA recommends the following to ensure your pet is safe…

• Keep at least 3 days worth of food in an airtight and waterproof container.
• Store at least 3 days of water for your pets. This is in addition to the water you need for you and your family.
• Keep an extra supply of your pet’s medications in a waterproof container.
• Make sure you have a first aid kit for your pet. This should include cotton bandage rolls, bandage tape, scissors, antibiotic ointment, flea and tick prevention, latex gloves, isopropyl alcohol and saline solution. Also include a pet first aid reference book.
• Make sure your pet has a collar or harness with ID tags and a rabies tag. Include a backup collar with ID and backup leash.
• Place your pet’s registration information, vaccination history and medical records in a plastic bag or waterproof container.
• If you need to use a crate or pet carrier to transport your animal, make sure that the carrier is large enough for your pet to stand, turn around and lie down.
• A current photo of you and your pet. If you get separated, this will assist in identifying your pet.
• Include familiar items such as toys, treats or bedding to help reduce the stress of your pet.

Many evacuation shelters do not allow pets, so check with your local animal shelter to see if a pet friendly shelter has been set up in your area. For Pennsylvania, you can check the Pennsylvania State Animal Response Team’s site ~ this page will be updated with shelter information as needed.
